Isle of Islay

 

Duration: 9 months
Placement Host: RSPB 
Location: Isle of Islay
Landholding: 5000 ha
Livestock: 400 cattle, 1000 sheep
 
The Project:  We own significant herds of cattle and flocks of sheep whose grazing actions are utilised to benefit species as diverse as Greenland barnacle geese and marsh fritillary butterflies.  Chough, corncrakes and wading birds like lapwing are also priority species on our sites in this area.  Any trainee will have to opportunity to experience the full range of livestock and land management across these sites whilst being part of a large and diverse team.
 
The Work: As part of the large team, the trainee would be expected to assist in all aspects of livestock handling; lambing, calving, treatments, moving stock etc.  Field and machinery work, under supervision initially, will be part of their remit. They will have the opportunity to further assist with a range of survey and monitoring work on a variety of species and habitats directly linked to each site and to relevant work.
