Sefydlwyd y prosiect o dan yr enw Gweundir Byw Sir Benfro – Pembrokeshire’s Living Heathlands (1999-2006) ac mae’n parhau bellach yn rhan o brosiect INTERREG. Drwyddo, mae’r Ymddiriedolaeth Genedlaethol yn adfer gweundir iseldirol ac arfordirol sydd wedi’i esgeuluso neu ei adael ar 30 safle sydd o dan berchenogaeth amrywiol. Mewn partneriaeth â chyrff cadwraeth eraill, ariannwyd y cam cyntaf gan gynllun Tomorrow’s Heathland Heritage (THH) a chyfraniadau partner.
Gwnaed gwaith cyfalaf i gryfhau’r ffordd y rheolir eiddo gweundir yr Ymddiriedolaeth Genedlaethol ac ailsefydlu cynlluniau pori ar gyfres o diroedd comin, a’r rhan fwyaf ohonynt heb berchennog. Mae cyfanswm o 600 hectar o weundir yn cael ei bori gan wartheg a merlod mynydd Cymreig sy’n eiddo i’r Ymddiriedolaeth Genedlaethol, deiliaid hawliau tiroedd comin a phorwyr. Mae pori gwartheg gan ffermydd lleol wedi cynyddu pumplyg ers i’r prosiect ddechrau. Mae’r prosiect yn ymblethu â Rhwydwaith Pori Sir Benfro.
Originating as the Gweundir Byw Sir Benfro – Pembrokeshire’s Living Heathlands project (1999-2006) and now continuing as part of an INTERREG project, the National Trust is restoring neglected or abandoned lowland and coastal heathland on 30 sites of varied ownership. In a partnership with other conservation bodies the first phase was funded by the Tomorrows Heathland Heritage (THH) scheme and partner contributions.
Capital works were undertaken to enhance the management of National Trust heathland properties and to re-establish grazing regimes on a suite of mostly ownerless commons. In total 600ha of heathland is grazed by cattle and Welsh Mountain ponies belonging to the National Trust, commons rights holders and graziers. Cattle grazing by local farms has undergone a fivefold increase since the project started. The project dovetails with the Pembrokeshire Grazing Network.
